Lucas Pierce attended an Opti clinic hosted by California Yacht Club in Marina del Rey on the weekend of March 21-22, 2009. Former US National Champion Alex Bunt took time off from his studies at UC Santa Cruz to run the clinic.
Saturday's sailing was pretty light with winds in the 5-8 knot range. Sunday? Not so much! A low pressure system slid through California overnight accompanied by a blustery clearing breeze. The clinic attendees were greeted by sustained winds of 20-25 with puffs over 30.
Carnage and general mayhem ensued. After getting all of the kids and boats back to the dock, coach Alex took a few of the brave back out for some fun reaching and planing while others watched from coach boats.
The Staff twins were celebrating their birthdays, so cupcakes were enjoyed by all before Lucas and his chauffeur/shore crew hit PCH for the ride home.It turned out to be a great drive home as Malibu was littered with kite boarders and windsurfers ripping it up in the big breeze. We saw a couple of kite boarders get HUGE air!
